Originally commissioned for The New Black exhibition as part of Resonate 2015, #unicornthings is Isabella Streffen’s ridiculous but deadly serious attempt to re-enact her favourite GIFs by analogue means. Cavorting ‘en unicorn’ whilst trying to generate a rainbow using light and a prism, she blows an irreverent raspberry at digital practices and contemporary art. Co-opting the music from Malcolm Le Grice’s 1970 film masterpiece Berlin Horse, she reminds us that all technologies were once new. Finally defeated by her complete lack of the right equipment and an escaping kitten, she vomits up an underwhelming glitter rainbow.
Isabella reconceived #unicornthings as a cabaret piece for Carnesky Productions Finishing School at the legendary Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club in November 2015 (main picture)
